I know it's not very significant in the scheme of things but this paragraph sums up a lot about the Brisbane Lions.
"At the club's best and fairest count at the Brisbane convention centre tonight, Michael Voss will announce whether he will play on. If he goes, the decline of the Brisbane empire will be complete. Of those who played in all three premiership sides between 2001 and 2003, five will be left."
Which makes next season very challenging. Another season of pain and re-building. At least the Lions seem to be willing to put up with the short term pain to gain another shot at the flag in a few years time. Winning 3 in a row seems to have been not good for the club, no matter how good it looks in the record books.

I would argue the other way mate. I think it was worth the pain for those premiership years. Those years turned our club from the laughing stock of the AFL into a club full of history, and more importantly, success. I'd rather be where we are now with the history and pride that now exists within the club, not to mention the financial benefits of those years, than where we might be right now if we hadn't sacrificed everything to keep that team together.
You're of course welcome to your own opinion but I think it was very much worth it.
You can't say worth the pain in the past tense because I'm talking about the future and the present. Hawthorn and the Kangaroos have a lot of pride and history but off the field aren't doing that well.
My point isn't very clear, but it was meant to be was the club too fixated on winning those 3 premierships that they didn't have the necessary player turnover to continue the onfield success outside once the playing group started aging?
I don't know the answer, I just thought it was worth pondering. Thanks for the opinion :)
