Anyway, Chester was fantastic. It was a nice clear sunny day (still
cold) but things always look better when the sun is out. 20 minutes by
train and I was there. I'd done a bit of research, so I knew there
wasn't actually much in Chester apart from a wall and a cathedral,
which was alright as I wanted to watch the Liverpool v Everton game as
well. So I only wandered around the town for 2 hours or so, which was
enough to get an impression.
First thing I did was find "probably the second most photographed
clock tower in Britain". It's not that impressive, but it is quite
nice. What is more impressive is the really long street full of shops
and performers that is right behind it. I got some good photo's of it,
but basically instead of shops just being on one level, there is a
second level of shops above the main one. I believe they're called
'The Rows', and it is really nice. I'll be going back there to do some
Christmas shopping I think, as there are a lot of stores to choose
from.
After wandering around there, I found a map of the town at the bus
station and decided to walk around the walls. They were originally
built by the Romans, and then used by the Saxons and then by Royalists
(I think) in the civil war. So they're a bit of a hodgepodge of
styles, but a really good way of seeing the town. I only made it half
way round as I ran out of time though, which was a shame. The river
Dee is quite pretty as well...but there is no way I'm going punting on
the river until high summer.
The cathedral, as most are, was an impressive monument to catholicism.
Doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. Since you had to
pay for a tour, I didn't see anything of the inside apart from the
gift shop. Which had no decent postcards so none will be winging their
way back to England this week. Spotting another old building across
the way, I headed over there and discovered it was the town hall. And
sitting outside it was a busker, about to start playing the harp. I
really wish I could show you the photo to prove I'm telling the truth.
She hadn't started in the short time I was there so I kept going.
And that's pretty much it for my visit to Chester. Liverpool won 2-1
when they really shouldn't have (if you watched the game, you'll know
what I mean) and I had one of the best lasagne's I've ever had at the
pub I watched the game at. All in all, a nice leisurely Saturday. This
weekend there won't be any updates as I'm going to an Uncles place for
the weekend instead of sight-seeing. I have found some more photos of
Blackpool that I will put up as soon as I can though along with the
Chester photos.
Also, this morning was the first time since I've gotten here that
there has been a frost. All the grass was white and it looked very
pretty. A little too cold for my liking, but at least it wasn't
snowing :)
