Australia lost to Italy 1-0 off a penalty with the last kick of the game. I can't find it in my heart to say that Australia deserved to win simply because Italy were so good at what they did. Which was hold us up and counter-attack. If it had gone to extra time then I think we would have won but all credit to them, they played better and they tricked the ref to get the penalty. I also can't find it in my heart to be upset with the ref as it's after an hour and a half in the hot sun who's had to make the hard decisions. He was right next to play as the photo's show and Neil should have stayed on his feet. If I feel sorry for anybody it is Neil who has had as close to a faultless tournament as anybody in the World Cup can claim.
I'm no longer one-eyed enough to think we were robbed now that we're out. We simply weren't good enough on the day. It was very nearly the other way around but it's not to be this year. And I can't see it happening again for at least 8 years, we simply don't have the depth coming through just yet. I think with a couple of years behind the A-League we may end up with enough young players coming through for 2014 but not 2010. I hope I'm wrong but this year was our best chance to go a long way and now it's gone. It was a great journey though. As has been said before, it's not where you go that's important, it's how you get there.
